1,128 students begin long-awaited trip home
PUTRAJAYA: A total of 1,128 students from local higher education institutions have started their much anticipated journey back to their hometowns after being stuck in their hostels since the start of the movement control order (MCO).
A batch of 863 students hailing from the central region started their journey to the northern region on Monday night, said Senior Minister Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob.
Another 265 students will be returning from the northern region to the central region tonight. Forty-nine buses, heading to 17 locations, were used to ferry the students from nine local universities.
Ismail Sabri said the buses and the students’ luggage would be sanitised three hours before the journey. He also assured the students would not be left hungry during the breaking of fast as Marrybrown and Gardenia were sponsoring food. “The government always welcomes sponsorship by the private sector. If any groups are interested, they can contact the Higher Education Ministry, ” he said during his daily briefing at Putrajaya yesterday. As for students from Sabah and Sarawak, they will head home beginning next month.
They will depart from four airports in their respective regions – Sultan Mahmud Airport (Terengganu), Penang International Airport, Senai International Airport (Johor) and KLIA.
